  1. Slow down. Probably the most obvious tip in a construction zone is to slow down. Follow the posted speed limits at all times, even when workers are not present. Construction zones tend to be more congested and dangerous, which is why the speed limits are lowered.
  2. Follow the directions. Take special care to follow directions given by a flagger, as those are likely the most dangerous areas of the construction zone.
  3. ”Take 10”. If you need to merge lanes, using the “take 10” technique will help you do so safely. Put on your turn signal three seconds before starting your lane change, and take seven seconds to complete it while carefully watching your mirrors.
  4. Drive defensively. Be sure not to follow too closely to the vehicle in front of you and keep a safe distance from other vehicles, barriers and equipment, and construction workers.
  5. Obey the posted signs. Even if you don’t see workers present, it is still important to obey all of the posted signs in a construction zone until you see the ones that say you’ve left the construction zone.
  6. Be patient. While it isn’t the most convenient thing to be slowed down in a construction zone, remember it is for the safety of everyone on the road, and try to have patience
