Engine Oil

Why it’s important: Engine oil keeps your engine running smoothly with helps to lubricate it and keep particles away.
How to check: Remove the dipstick and wipe clean. Re-insert the dipstick completely, then remove again and examine.
How to tell if it’s normal: There should be notches on the dipstick that indicate normal levels, so if your oil is not in between the notches, you need to add some oil. It should have a smooth consistency and appear transparent- if the oil is dark and gritty it is time to change it.

Power Steering Fluid

Why it’s important: Power steering fluid is a hydraulic fluid that transfers energy in your steering system, and when you don’t have enough fluid, components of the steering system lose lubrication and start to break down.
How to check: Find the tank near the firewall, at the base of the windshield. Levels should be in between the minimum and maximum markings.
How to tell if it’s normal: If your car starts making noises related to steering (like whining and moaning) or if leaks start to occur, it is a good idea to get your power steering fluid checked out.

Coolant

Why it’s important: Coolant helps your car from overheating, which can lead to mechanical breakdown or engine failure.
How to check: Find the clear overflow plastic container near the radiator and examine the fluid level (most accurate readings occur when the car is cold).
How to tell if it’s normal: Make sure the coolant level is in between the markings on the side of the container. If it is too low, fill it to the appropriate level with a mix of 50/50 water and coolant.

brake fluid reservoir

Brake Fluid

Why it’s important: Brake fluid transfers the force from the driver pressing the brake pedal directly onto the wheel hub to help slow the car. It also serves as a lubricant to all movable parts and helps to prevent corrosion.
How to check: Find the reservoir (location varies with car models); it is usually up near the firewall. open the reservoir quickly to examine the fluid levels and verify they are between the minimum and maximum markings. Don’t leave the reservoir open for too long as the moisture in the air could ruin your brake fluid.
How to tell if it’s normal: If the fluid is dark in color, that is a sign that your fluid needs to be changed.
