  1. Prepare your vehicle: You should check out your tire tread and pressure, fluid levels, battery and keep your gas tank above a half tank before any trips so that you are sure your car is ready for the colder weather.
  2. Take it slow: Sometimes the speed limit is too fast to be able to control your vehicle, so don’t be afraid to slow it down in order to maintain control of your vehicle in bad weather. Drive at a speed that is comfortable for you given the road conditions.
  3. Brake carefully: It is much harder for your tires to gain traction in the winter when the roads are slick and snow-covered, so give yourself plenty of time to brake, and try not to drive too close to other drivers.
  4. Increase your stopping distance: In the winter, it is smart to stop further away from other vehicles. At a stoplight, you should come to a stop far enough away from the vehicle in front of you that you can fully see their tires.
  5. Use caution: Winter can make travel difficult and dangerous. Even if you are confident driving in the winter, others may not be as skilled, so accidents can still happen. Watch the weather as you are planning trips, and use your best judgment to determine if it is safe to make your trip.
