Tips to prevent car sickness

The most common symptoms of motion sickness are nausea, dizziness, vomiting, sweating and a general sense of feeling unwell. Following some or all of these tips and tricks may help you combat your motion sickness:

  • Watch what you eat and drink. Foods that are spicy, rich or make you feel unusually full, as well as alcohol and other liquids with caffeine, can worsen your symptoms, so stick to light snacks and water and during your trip.
  • Avoiding foods with a strong odor can help prevent feelings of nausea.
  • The front seat of a car can be helpful to give you a better view of the movement around you.
  • Do not sit backwards from your direction of travel.
  • Do not read while the car is moving.
  • Finding a source of fresh air such as opening a vent or a window whenever possible can be helpful.
  • Motion sickness medication can be helpful if symptoms are severe.
  • Laying down and/or shutting your eyes while keeping still, or looking at a fixed point on the horizon are better than reading or looking around inside the vehicle.
