Thunderstorms

  • Prepare your vehicle by making sure your windshield wipers are in good working condition.
  • Turn on your headlights to be seen better by other vehicles on the road.
  • Take it slower than normal to avoid losing traction on the roadway.
  • Use caution if the roadway becomes flooded. It is best to find an alternate route if the road ahead looks flooded.

High Winds

  • Keep your eyes open for any debris that may have been blown onto the road.
  • Use extra caution around trailers, vans, or vehicles carrying cargo.
  • If you are the driver of a vehicle carrying cargo or pulling a trailer, it is best not to drive in high winds. Postpone your travels or pull over until the wind dies down.

Hailstorm

  • It is best not to drive in those conditions, so if possible, postpone your travels until the threat of a hailstorm has passed.
  • If you are already on the road, try to take cover by parking under an overpass or bridge until the hail stops.

Tornado

  • Do not attempt to outrun the tornado in your vehicle. If possible, exiting your vehicle to seek shelter is optimal.
  • If no shelter is available, find a spot in a low-ground area such as a ditch to lay face down with your hands covering your head.
